Strengthening Ties Between Hong Kong and Hainan

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong was recently invited by Commissioner Cui Jianchun and the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to participate in a delegation visit to Hainan province.

Our Chairman, Alex Tam, was part of this distinguished group that included consuls general, foreign chamber of commerce leaders, and representatives from major international companies and financial institutions in Hong Kong.

The trip aimed to promote business cooperation between Hong Kong and China, with a focus on helping foreign companies and organizations in Hong Kong learn more about the rapid development of the Hainan Free Trade Port and explore ways to strengthen the connectivity between Hainan and the Greater Bay Area.

The delegation was also introduced about the special legislated low tax regulations and visa-free access for 59 countries to all of Hainan, including from Canada, providing many potential opportunities for businesses to leverage both Hong Kong and Hainan to expand business and innovations

During the visit, the delegation had the chance to tour impressive facilities across Hainan, including:

  • Hainan Farizon, a new energy commercial vehicle assembly and manufacturing plant
  • The Hainan International Commercial Aerospace Launch Centre, China's first commercial rocket launch service
  • The Wenchang Aerospace Supercomputing Center
  • Hainan Ausca International Oils and Grains production facility that imports 90% of their canola seeds from Canada annually
  • The Boao Lechang International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone with 29 hospitals and 30 multinational pharmaceutical/medical device companies
  • A state-of-the-art nuclear power plant
  • And impressive logistic, transport, and port operations

This was the third such visit organized by the MFA after COVID-19, following trips to the Greater Bay Area and central China provinces. It was a valuable opportunity for Hong Kong's business community to deepen their understanding of Hainan's rapid development and explore new avenues for collaboration.
